noisy classmates

I was in a lunch time class today...didn't have see friends/familiar faces there, so I put my mat down next to a random stranger. It's a "slow flow" class (not hot) with lots of warm-up and work on alignment, and no music. My neighbor grunted quite audibly with every single movement we made--for example, each separate piece of sun salutes.

I've been in plenty of classes where someone has a bad cough, and a couple where someone's stomach was amusingly audible, but this was the first I could remember where I had a grunting classmate.

Non-heated studios in the Boston area?

Greetings,

Do you have any recommendations for non-heated studios in the Boston area? I'm planning to try Blissful Monkey in JP; just wondering about any others.

Many thanks, and Namaste.

my Cow Face is really different on left side compared to right

When I practice Gomukhasana, I can reach a lot farther with one hand than the other. When my right hand is up/over shoulder/reaching downward, I can touch the fingertips of the left hand as it comes up my back. When I switch sides, my hands are nowhere near each other. I realize the human body isn't symmetrical, and I am right-handed, but also I feel like something is probably off...maybe one side is not as flexible, or old habits are keeping me from moving into the pose properly. This isn't a pose I ever encounter in class, just something I do at home. (My hands are similarly uneven when I'm doing a similar move off the mat, like trying to put sunscreen on my back.)

How can I increase range of motion for this pose? Or should I not actively try to increase flexibility?

A question from newbie.

Hi. I fond of martial arts and brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) most notably. I want to practice yoga at home for my strengh, stamina and flexibility increase. With no offence to anybody I want to practice yoga only as physical culture and maybe the cure for my spine and knees but not as an energetic thing, meditation or cleaning of my organism (as much as it possible). Can you advice me some notable DVDs or some names of instructors who could release such DVDs for I could search something concrete?

Even the names would be greate because in BJJ-world for example we have tons of video on dvds and youtube but some of them have not high quality technics, some have even wrong technics or pure nonsense and it's hard for newbie to understand what is wrong or what is write. Also we have some names who's dvds you can buy without any fear - you know that all that this man says is clear truth. Do you have such people or notable video lessons in yoga? Also you can find videos in google and youtube by using words "yoga for BJJ" of "yoga for fighters" by Phil Migliarese in particular. It would be greate if you'll say "this man is greate yoga master" or "no this is some kind of absurdity". Thank you for your attention.

What is your yoga of choice?

Hello all!

This is my first post. I wanted to ask some questions of other yogis. I tried to ask my friends list, and it turns out that besides myself, a lot of my friends aren't yogis!

I have been doing mainly Bikram yoga for ten years now, and I've been thinking recently that I know an awful lot about Bikram, but not much about other types of yoga. So I want to go exploring! Not because I don't love my hot room, but because I like to see things from different angles and perspectives.

But I don't know where to start! So here are my questions:

#1 - What sort of yoga do you do?

#2 - Why does it appeal to you?

#3 - How long have you been practicing?

#4 - Do you go to a studio? Do they have a website with more info?

Just a note here: This is not a post about whose yoga practice is "better" or "more legitimate", this is a learning post to discover what else is out there! I appreciate your input very much. Thank you!

Question

Hey all!

I have two questions, and I'm really hoping someone can answer them!

I've noticed that through regular practice my hips are a lot more open. While this great I've also noticed that I can FEEL the tension from sitting too long etc now that I'm more self aware of my body. So it's a double edged sword because while I love being able to reach full expressions, my left hip is really hurting. It's more hurting in behind the middle of the hip, maybe around the posterior ischium rather than the ilium. :/

So my questions are: does this happen to others and how do you fix it? Currently I've been stretching it more, but this feels like it's compounding the issue. I've also tried pressure on it which helps a bit. :(

Moved my small studio today

I have a small home yoga studio and have for years, as I closed my strip mall space a few years ago to save some money. It is in the front of our house, our old living room next to our guest bath so that works nicely. And we have a separate family room in the back of our house for us. The students walk in and they are in the yoga room. Shoes go out on the porch. I can hold from 4 to 8 students and an average class is about six so it has been working out well, before and after my strip mall studio.

But now, we are remodeling that front bathroom so I had to move the students to my friend C. home studio about ten miles away. Let's hope the students make the drive, I am thinking half will. Some of them have been with me for many years, but the newer students might not make it over.

We had the first class tonight with four people, it went well, a very quiet peaceful atmosphere. It seems the classes will grow and there is more potential for growth because the room is larger, I think I could have ten students there.

Home studios are nice in a way as there is no gym feel and the students like how it feels intimate. Usually it also ends up being a few neighbors so that is nice too, get the yoga vibe going in the neighborhood. When I was at the strip mall there was so much outside noise, home studios are quieter I have noticed, and much easier on the pocketbook.

I am so grateful for my friend C. for letting me use her room, and letting me bring all my props, I have a lot of props! She is also a teacher but she teaches a different style that is Kripalu and I teach Svaroopa. January should be fine teaching over there, lets see what February brings!

Is anyone else out there teaching from home or taking classes in someones home? I would love to know your thoughts on this.

Here is a photo of the room...I just love her floor! That is a little over half of the room showing in this photo. I know it is not fancy but we don't need fancy to practice yoga do we?

Namaste!
& Sat nam,
elena

Newbie (!) + Some Ideas

Hi, so I'm new to the community. I've been looking for a community about yoga for so long, it's not even funny. I finally found this community thanks to the LJ homepage! But yeah, my name is May. Here's some basic information about me:
Favorite Color: Blue/Green
Animal I Associate Myself With: Hummingbird, or any type of bird really.
Favorite Food: Anything Sweet(Chocolate/Sweetish Fish), Anything Salty (Pretzels), Anything Spicy (Pizza With Red Pepper), Anything Cheesy( Chese-Filled Pizza).
Country I Absolutely Love: This one is so hard because each country/culture has something amazing! But if I had to chose it would be Russia/France.

Now in relation to Yoga:
I've been a Yogi since: 12/14/10
I stopped doing yoga: 04/11
I started doing yoga again: 11/09/11
My favorite time to practice yoga: Before Day Break
Favorite Type of Yoga: Anusara
Doshic Energy: Vata
Currently Doing: Moon Salutations

So that's me. :) I'm so happy I've found a place where I can talk about yoga with other people. I finally started doing yoga again after a long pause. So the thoughts that I've had about yoga are mostly grateful ones. Yoga helped me get through a lot of things back then it's kept my moods balanced now. I love yoga and I love the benefits that come with it. What I find disappointing, though, is that some people do yoga just for the nice body. I feel that yoga is so much more than that. Now if it's to gain a nice body to gain confidence and happiness again, I don't mind, but when people do yoga in vain it makes me so sad. :( Enough of my preaching! Please comment/reply to this post, I would enjoy hearing your thoughts/conversing with some, if not all, of you!

sharing my awesome class experience

today i had a staff dinner at work that was one of those 'required' things you had to do. in going to this i ended up missing my regular yoga class today, determined to keep my schedule of going to a studio class 3 days a week i went to the last class of the day.  this turned out to be an amazing experience.

this class is taught by the owner of the studio, and before this week i have been avoiding her classes.  i went to one of her classes and it was a very advanced class with a lot of poses i am not physically able to do yet. i understand and did modifications of each pose and spent a good part of the class in child's pose or doing the gentler flow due to the amount of strength needed for it, but it still kinda intimidated me about any other classes she taught. turns out this class was a very beginners class, explaining the three part breath, how to get into warrior two, and triangle and the like.

i personally have been practicing off and on for 6 years, but i am not very physically active exercise wise so i knew everything she was explaining but felt like i wasn't to advanced for the class.  i was able to get some better understanding and explore new feeling in poses you do each time you practice. this class also had two teachers observing the class and helping the students with alignment and adding props as needed.  this was really helpful as i learned that even though i can get into shoulder stand with no problem, that if i add a blanket to my shoulders i gain a huge ability to breath more fully. outside of this class no other teacher has suggested that to me. also, i was assisted by the owner into headstand.  being someone who doesn't work out 3 times a week, who is a shapely lady i never thought headstand was an option to me. and while i was informed afterwards as i expected i need to work on strengthening my core and i noticed how much strength i needed in my legs and hamstrings to get up there, i did it! this was the first time in my life in practice and out of practice that i've lifted my legs over my head and was suspended. it was an amazing feeling, not scary like i've felt before. and i feel so empowered afterwords.

my teacher also mentioned this experience which was really profound to me. she said relationships are about opening up, letting go, and accepting.  wow, to me that is so profound and really something to think about because in my personal life i do not see examples of that at all and that is something i want to try to do in my romantic relationship.

afterwards i discussed things mentioned in class with one of the teachers, talked to a student about feelings and physical logistics of inversion poses, and thanked the other teacher for helping me out with shoulderstand and my experiences with it.  i really felt a strong sense of community.  before becoming a karma yogi here and being able to afford going to a studio i was trying to find a sense of community, people who are focusing on improving themselves and looking inward and being able to experience getting to know these people off the mat as well. i felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude of findng a space to explore and connect with others.

i wanted to share my experience with other yogis who would understand these feelings. :) i tried explaining to my boyfriend and he was unphased and disinterested, head what? lol

Preparing for morning Bikram

Hi all,

I will be attending my first Bikram class tomorrow morning. Lately I notice that even if I eat two hours before my regular yoga practice my stomach feels upset.

So - since this is early in the morning, what do you recommend I eat and/or drink before class? I am planning on waking up only 30 minutes before leaving since it's early and I've had trouble sleeping lately.

Thanks! The class is tomorrow but I appreciate advice even if you comment after tomorrow morning because I plan on attending this class a few more times.

p.s I also appreciate any other helpful tips for a good Bikram session!

Occasionally, when I'm in the middle of a yoga set or meditating the top of my head begins to tingle and feel tight. Would you say that my crown chakra is opening/being stimulated? Has anyone else had this sensation? Or has anyone had a similar experience you'd like to share?

ankle-less

I recently did a number on my ankle... might be a sprain or an occult fracture, doesn't matter because the practical is that I can't walk/stand/anything on it without wearing a big, partially-immobilising boot. I'm going crazy just sitting about and I figure that there are some asanas I can do which won't involve the feet.

I'm turning to the forum for whatever suggestions anyone has of great asanas or even sequences that will make me feel like I'm really doing something without keeping me in the boot for longer than required. I've an excess of food to burn and I'm starved for activity, and I'm battling misery being stuck in a chair.

Strenghtening the forearms (especially the wrist extensors)

Hi

I have been a long time reader &sometimes commenter here on yoga.

On a climbing forum a fellow writer has a problem with the back of his wrists &in fact I have some problems (partially because of 2 decades with keyboard) with my forearms also.

Do you know asanas or practices for strenghtening the back of forearm, wrists or forearms in general? Any help is appreciated.

help a newb?

Thanks a lot in advance, everybody! My name is Shannon. I'm kind of inexperienced. I used to do yoga every day off of beginners instructional videos and books, but I have never learned 'properly.' I'd really like to take classes, especially to learn it with the traditions and all, but they are all really expensive around me!

I recently renewed my interest, and have been trying to do a bit every day. I'm using 'OM Yoga' by Cyndi Lee, because for the most part it has really clear illustrations and explanations... except Saturday. Saturday is inversions, and it wasn't any help AT ALL.

inversion advice, please? )

The Back Incident

Dear Yoga Community,

I need your help. A couple weeks ago I was doing something completely ordinary. Just putting a collar on my dog in the morning. I didn't twist weird or over extend anything. Just putting a collar on my dog and something audibly popped in my lower back and I immediately felt nauseous and almost passed out from the pain. Then I went a week trying to work it out on my own. Then I gave up and a week of muscle relaxers and pain killers later, I'm almost good as new.

Almost. Today is the second time I've attempted my yoga practice since my back went out. I took it slow, did mostly gentle stretches, warmed up my body really well before trying anything more active. The funny thing is, besides my flow being humoursly, just, off, everything went well. Except I can't get into downward dog to save my life. Any other bending or pose that focuses on the back is fine. But downward dog is painful. Sharp pains move hoizonally through my lower back and hips the moment i try to bring my heels to the ground and lengthen my back.

Note that before the Back Incidnet, my downward dog was gorgeous and refreshing.

I would take this to my instructor, but I've been doing it alone from the get go for 4 years now. Thoughts? My instict is to gently ease myself as far into it as I can stand a couple times each practice and hold. But then, with the pain, I wonder if I should avoid it altogether for a week or two first? But then I feel like I'm fighting against the inevitbale loss of flexability when a torn muscle repairs itself.

I don't, actually, know what to do. Do you?

Sore Hands.

I feel like this has been asked before, but I went through 1+ year of entries and no luck.

I have serious issues with my hands when doing inverted poses - mainly downward facing dog and plank - where I am supporting myself partially with my hands/arms.  I have the strength and flexibility to hold myself correctly but my hands hurt so badly - sometimes for days after my practice.  It's a tingling feeling (almost a numbness in my finger tips) and I feel like my hands have no strength in them (ex: after my class on Saturday I had a hard time buttoning my pants using my fingers).

Any ideas what this could be from?  Or perhaps how to prevent it from happening in the future?

More asana help.

There seem to be some very knowledgeable people here, so I'm hoping you can help me with my shoulderstand problem.

Whenever I do shoulderstand, my neck is very stiff for the next few days.  I have fairly stiff neck and shoulders anyway (related to breastfeeding and co-sleeping with my baby) so I'm already spending at least a quarter of my practice time working to release them.  It might be that I'm just not strong enough for shoulderstand yet, but it feels fairly comfortable while I'm actually there and I'm a bit reluctant to give it up as it's the only properly inverted pose I do.  I suspect the problem might be to do with how I get into it - any ideas?

2 injury questions

Collective wisdom consultation here:

1/ I have a student that's had plantar fasciiatis and she gets tense-then pain in her back foot when turned out in W2 or triangle. Thoughts? I've read up on how to use yoga to rehab plantar fasciiatis but not how to deal with it during class;

2/ I have another student that said his testicles hurt during reclined abdominal/core exercises. He swears he isn't clenching his bum or pelvic floor while doing core work.

Thoughts??
